Mingus Creek to Deeplow Gap

The hike for Wednesday, January 18, 2023 hike left from the SMNP's Mingus Mill parking lot, and continued over 2.9 miles to Deeplow Gap, with elevation gain of 1873 ft over a 3 mile climb.

Ellicott Rock via Bad Creek Trail 3/9

The destination for this approximately 5 mile in-out hike takes us into the heart of the 8,000 plus acres of the Ellicott Rock Wilderness area (see map for its trails)  that was begun in 1975 and expanded in 1984. This unique 3 state wilderness area  is named after a famous surveyor (Major Andrew Ellicott) who chiseled a rock N-G along the Chattooga River on December 26, 1811 to attempt to settle a boundary dispute, an effort which gave 18 miles of territory to North Carolina that Georgia claimed. It is the only wilderness area to include territory from 3 states and 3 national forests and further includes a separately designated "wild and scenic" river corridor running through its heart like a bent spear. Noland Creek Hike 1/26/22

  Snowy road conditions in the park kept us from our January 19th hike, which brought us to Noland Creek on the 26th. Driving up through the main drag (Everett St) of Bryson City and on past Swain County High School, the road becomes Fontana Rd (Lake View Drive on the NSMP map), otherwise famous/infamous for its local title as the Road to Nowhere.  This time of year, the end of the Road to Nowhere is blocked to the parking lot by the tunnel. A half-mile before that and a sweeping curving bridge is a parking lot on the left, from which a trail leads down and under the bridge. In sunny 30 to 40 degree weather, we hiked upstream climbing some 300 feet of elevation over 4.2 miles, to the planned lunch-site at the 3 picnic tables of campsite 64. "Trail/hike" implies something much less, but this is a wide, easy-walking flat dirt road. From the clear imprint of the tire tracks, this is a road well traveled by park rangers as well. Smokemont's Bradley Fork Trail to Cabin Flat

The 2nd map above shows the route taken in our January 11 hike where we stopped at the fork in the trail, short of Cabin Flats, had lunch, then hiked back. The Oconaluftee elk herd (Cervus canadensis) was out in full force as we drove by the visitor center around 9:30 am. Along the trail we found sign of another regular in the park, coyote (Canis latrans). ----- ----- ----- Yes, we have left the edge of the empire, no cell phone access throughout this hike. Group hiking involves a great deal of consultation.  The horse mounting stand made a great lunch table. After a bit, the nice park benches appear, seemingly 2 per mile?
