Flat Laurel Creek to Little Sam's Knob 3-16-2022



RAIN, postponed to March 23.
The hike for March 16 is a loop hike of about  8 miles, located south of Waynesville. It is Flat Laurel  Creek to Little Sam's Knob, and back to hwy 215 and the parking  area. One good route is to follow the Blue Ridge Parkway to hwy 215, then turn left. The parking area is a short distance beyond the turn and on the right side of the road. We will meet at Poteet  Park at 9:00 AM.  The map above is not totally accurate in that it shows a route going around an unmarked knob which is Little Sam's Knob and a connecting trail that shortcuts the longer red line and a return to the parking lot. It looks like there are many "option" routes and shorter routes that could meet the wide interests of our group, and the actual route will be explained Wednesday morning.

The destination for this approximately 5 mile in-out hike takes us into the heart of the 8,000 plus acres of the Ellicott Rock Wilderness area (see map for its trails)  that was begun in 1975 and expanded in 1984. This unique 3 state wilderness area  is named after a famous surveyor (Major Andrew Ellicott) who chiseled a rock N-G along the Chattooga River on December 26, 1811 to attempt to settle a boundary dispute, an effort which gave 18 miles of territory to North Carolina that Georgia claimed. It is the only wilderness area to include territory from 3 states and 3 national forests and further includes a separately designated "wild and scenic" river corridor running through its heart like a bent spear. Noland Creek Hike 1/26/22

  Snowy road conditions in the park kept us from our January 19th hike, which brought us to Noland Creek on the 26th. Driving up through the main drag (Everett St) of Bryson City and on past Swain County High School, the road becomes Fontana Rd (Lake View Drive on the NSMP map), otherwise famous/infamous for its local title as the Road to Nowhere.  This time of year, the end of the Road to Nowhere is blocked to the parking lot by the tunnel. A half-mile before that and a sweeping curving bridge is a parking lot on the left, from which a trail leads down and under the bridge. In sunny 30 to 40 degree weather, we hiked upstream climbing some 300 feet of elevation over 4.2 miles, to the planned lunch-site at the 3 picnic tables of campsite 64. "Trail/hike" implies something much less, but this is a wide, easy-walking flat dirt road. From the clear imprint of the tire tracks, this is a road well traveled by park rangers as well. Thomas Divide to Kanati Trail (441 to 441) 2/22

(Updated 2/26) The screenshot below from Google Earth shows our route. According to the AllTrails app data, the Thomas Divide Trailhead begins off Hwy 441 at 4,652 feet and follows the ridges to the Kanati Trail intersection at around 4,697 feet, a climb of just some 45 feet over 1.8. So nice! From there the trail descends to 2,851 feet, a drop of 1,846 feet over 2.8 miles. It traverses the slopes and sounds of the small babbling brooks (example above) of 6 small watersheds, all feeding the Kanati Fork stream below. Though normally meeting at Poteet Park at 9 am, the time was pushed back an hour to let a rainy weather-front clear the area. A car shuttle was arranged to make the one way hike possible. Winter hiking has its advantages. This great view will be gone when the leaves come out. This hike contained a rich collection of green winter flora.
